Overview of Lesson Plan: In this lesson, students consider and create their own creative college essay prompts, then write an essay in response to one of the prompts. What kind of student? How do you know? Do you think her topic is interesting enough? Why do you think she chose it? Does she describe things well? Is the essay too short, too long, or the ideal length? Were they surprised by the results? Why or why not? Tell students not to make any marks on the applications, as they will be returned to the guidance office. Also have students look for questions or topics that seem to repeat from one application to another. These might include questions about an influential person or experience, why the prospective student wants to attend that particular college or university or an important life lesson. Then, in light of what they have read, have each student write an original college essay prompt designed to elicit essays of similar depth and complexity.
Next, arrange students in small groups. In their groups, college essay critique service, they should share their prompts, discuss the merits of each one and then select one that will be offered as an option to the whole class. As each group share its chosen prompt, write them on the board.
Then tell students to choose one prompt. Explain that their task is to write an essay as though it were part of a college application.
